Awarded for Excellence
We are extremely pleased to have been awarded the ASDAN certificate for Excellence for all of the work we do as an ASDAN centre delivering awards and qualifications. The certificate reflects the hard work and achievement of both our young people and the staff working with them – we couldn’t be more proud.
Choysez Gets Top Marks
We have shown ourselves to be at the top of the class for educational visits once again by being awarded another Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge. Awarded by the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom, the LOtC Quality Badge combines learning and safety into one easily recognisable badge for all organisations providing learning outside the classroom experiences. This is a real triumph for all of our staff as it shows that we offer young people the type of high quality learning experiences they really benefit from and we’re thrilled to have gained recognition for our efforts. Well done to everyone involved!
The Poetry Games
Some of our young people entered another Young Writers competition- The Poetry Games- and Shannon Hemsley has had her poem selected for the January anthology. This means that for each competition our young people have entered we have had a winner- and we think that 2 out of 2 ain’t bad! We’re really proud of Shannon for working so hard on her poem –so proud that we are showing off her poem here on our website:
My Pretty Kitten
My kitten’s so pretty, soft and small, She runs and plays and catches her ball. My kitten’s so clean and neat, After each meal she washes her feet. I love to pat her silky fur, And listen when she starts to purr. Then she takes a nap in the sun, Then the poem’s been done.

We’re Thinking Big
Choysez is now working with O2 as an O2 Think Big Youth Partner. Think Big gives young people the opportunity to apply for funding to help make their ideas happen. Like Choysez, Think Big aims to help young people think more positively about themselves and encourage their communities to do the same, which is why we are so excited to be working with them. We’ve already seen one young person’s project be approved and we can’t wait for it to get started. Keep checking the news page for updates on all our Think Big activities.
Around the World in 80 Words
Some of the young people at Choysez recently entered the Young Writers’ Around the World in 80 words creative writing competition and one of their poems has been selected to appear in a special anthology.
Sarah Maddocks will be able to see her poem The Fairground in the anthology when it is published in October. Her poem was selected based on imagination, perception, expression and creative use of language. We are looking forward to seeing it published!
A Safer Summer
A young person from Choysez has been helping Northumbria Police with their Ashington Safer Summer Campaign. Paige Bowdon has produced artwork for the campaign to tackle anti-social behaviour in the summer holidays. Paige has turned her life around at Choysez and wanted to give back to her community. To find out more about the project, read the Northumbria Police article online: http://www.northumbria.police.uk/your_neighbourhood/northumberland/details.asp?id=65154
Nomination for Youth Work Award
A few months ago we applied for a Children and Young People Now award and we have just found out that we have been short listed. Nearly 400 applications were received and Choysez is now alongside 8 other nominees in the Youth Work award category.
We are really proud to be short listed and really appreciate our hard work being recognised in this way. We are also pleased that our young people are being recognised as this nomination also reflects their efforts and everything they have achieved with us.
Making a World of Difference
A recent article on the Vodafone World of Difference website gives an insight into what our World of Difference winner has achieved on her placement. You can click here to read the full story.
We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank our website designer, Ivy Morgan from Six Filming, for her hard work and great ideas, and for managing to stay patient through our many updates and requests! Thank you Ivy.
Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge
We have recently been re-inspected for our Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge and have received an Adventuremark certificate in recognition that we have 'met the necessary standards for the safe delivery of adventure activities as defined by the Adventure Activities Industry Advisory Committee' (AAIAC). The badge is a sign that Choysez offers high quality teaching and experiences as well as managing risks effectively. We are very pleased with the overall comments in the report, and in particular the recognition of the improvements we have been making to our facilities. 'There has obviously been significant investment in diverse learning resources and these can be clearly seen around the main site and indeed at the residential both in Kielder forest park. It is clear that learning runs hand in hand with the outdoor environment, and the environment is used sensitively to encourage growth and development in the young person.' The report ends 'It is clear that Choysez is an organisation that will continue to go from strength to strength and the challenge is to maintain the good work being done, while maintaining the systems that fundamentally support its growth.'
Jay Saunderson, one of our young people, has recently been honoured with an ‘Outstanding Young Person’ award for his hard work in looking after our premises here in Bedlington. Congratulations Jay!
Show Racism the Red Card
Last November Choysez went into partnership with Morpeth FC, and this month our young people were taught about the Show Racism the Red Card campaign at Craik Park, with a talk from former Newcastle United defender Olivier Bernard.
World of Difference
We have a new employee under The Vodafone World of Difference Scheme which funds work placements in charities. Stephanie Edwards was one of around 5,000 people who applied, and won one of the 500 places. You can follow her blog here: http://worldofdifference.vodafone.co.uk/blogs/stephanie-edwards/
Common Room Makeover
The makeover of our common room is now complete, giving our young people more space to relax.
Our website has now been transformed to provide you with more information and to make it easier to use. You can find out about Choysez and our programmes in the ‘About Us’ and ‘Programmes’ sections, or get a glimpse of what our young people have been up to in the ‘gallery’.
